Slow the Duck Down is a bubbly pop tune that tackles a surprisingly serious subject: burnout. Written for anyone feeling frazzled, overwhelmed, or running on empty, the song aims to deliver a smile and a humorous reminder to take a breath when life starts quacking up.
Produced in my home studio, the track features a duet with my talented daughter, Ella. Recorded using overdubbing and mixed entirely in-the-box, the track presents a playful musical conversation between a young, burned-out Duck and a wise-cracking Clown. The exchange builds to a chorus that shifts from the song’s darker D minor verses into a brighter D major, delivering both its central message and the pun that inspired its title: Slow The Duck Down.
Set in an energetic 4/4 time, the song features a rap-style verse performed at double speed to reflect the Duck’s frantic, burnout-fuelled pace. This contrast makes the chorus’s advice all the more effective: quite simply, slow the duck down.
